Why word count matters in voiceover
Word count directly determines recording duration, which in turn influences pricing and production planning. In Romanian, the standard voiceover speed is 125 words per minute (WPM): the rate at which the message is delivered clearly, naturally and is easy for the listener to understand.
Optimal VO duration adds +2 seconds to the raw estimate, covering natural pauses, breathing and transitions between sentences. This prevents unrealistic expectations: if a client requests a lot of text in a very short time, the result will not sound natural.
The 3 base speeds:
- Conversational (125 WPM): the Romanian-language standard. Natural, clear and easy to understand. Ideal for most projects: commercials, IVR, narration, e-learning.
- Commercial (140 WPM): slightly faster, energetic. Suitable for radio/TV spots with limited time and dynamic tone.
- Fast read (165 WPM): rapid, for disclaimers, terms and conditions, legal notes at the end of a spot.

WPM values are calibrated for the Romanian language. English averages 150 WPM, but the structure of Romanian (longer words, diacritics) reduces the natural rhythm to ~125 WPM for optimal comprehension.
